Captain America (or: How Sam Ward Tricked Me Into Another 3D Movie)

July 29, 2011

If anyone read my Harry Potter review, and I know you all did, then you will be quite familiar with my head scratching reaction to 3D. I made myself a small pledge to not waste my time or money on it again. It really is lame. And so when Sam asked me to the movies (not on a date) I asked him to check the times. He did and we (along with Rock in his gloriously flooded VW Pheaton) went off to see Captain America. Of course when we got there we learned that he looked up the 3D times and I was to be once again subjected to all the drawbacks of this waste of money.

So let me get this out of the way. The 3D was again a waste of time. It added nothing, it distracted from the experience, and at best is cheesy garbage. When it comes to the movie, it actually wasn’t bad. I was worried the CG of a skinny Chris Evans would come off bad, but it didn’t. You could look past it and see the character. And Evans did such a good job as Cap. I was worried he would put he trademark smarmy snarky humor on a serious character and he didn’t. Cap is the honorable guy, he is the little man who hates a bully and Evans made sure that came through. Good for him to play it right and not just as Ryan Reynolds lite.

The story was basically what you know, and the action was good. There are some largely unbelievable moments like Cap’s entire team on top of a speeding train but had no problem standing or talking. If it was just Cap I could understand, he’s a super hero. But when it is a bunch if regular guys? No, stupid. Try again.

My biggest concern was how they would handle the issue of him living in the 1940′s and then flashing forward to the future. They did it well and I walked away not only happy but prepared to spend money to see The Avengers.

I liked this movie. My Grade: B
